O Henry may have spent much of his life in New York City, but he was a North Carolina native born in Greensboro (home of the posh O Henry Hotel!).
Born William Sydney Porter in 1862 he would grow up to be one of the nation's most influential writers--a master of the short story.
His themes were the problems and foibles of every day people just trying to get by. His humor was masterful and often subtle--though sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. He was best known for the sneaky twists he put into many of his endings.
In-house playwright Bill Hand has adapted five of those tales for the stage: The Cop and the Anthem, Makes the Whole World Kin, Mammon and the Archer, Sound and Fury, and The Last Leaf.
